The results you can get by hand often rival the look of embossing from a pricey craft machine. Dry embossing, also called relief embossing, is done by tracing a stencil with a special tool called a stylus. The result is a raised pattern on the object you are embossing. This project is easy, even if you're new to embossing. And it's fairly quick, as long as you select a relatively simple stencil. Hand embossing is ideal only for small projects, such as a greeting card or place cards for a single table setting.

If you plan to emboss on a larger scale, such as invitations for dozens of people, then you might want to consider purchasing an embossing machine to get the project done much faster. Either way, embossing is excellent for adding custom touches to cards, scrapbook pages, and more. Using masking tape or painter's tape, secure your stencil to the center of a window or lightbox.

The side of the stencil that's facing up should be the reverse of what you want to emboss. This is especially important when embossing lettering. If your embossing project involves using two or more stencils, only tape up one stencil at a time.

Fully emboss that stencil before repeating the process for the next one. If you want to create a makeshift lightbox, place a light under a glass-top table. Then, tape your stencil onto the glass surface. This faux lightbox should work just as well as the real versions you can find at craft stores. Place your cardstock or other paper over the stencil, and position it as desired.

Carefully tape the edges of the paper, so it lies flat over the stencil and won't move once you begin embossing. You might want to test your tape first on the paper to make sure it will remove cleanly and without tears.

To help your stylus glide smoothly and to reduce the risk of tears, you can gently rub wax paper over the paper before you begin embossing, though this is not absolutely essential. Press firmly, but be careful not to rip the paper. You can shade in solid parts of the design if you wish or just leave them outlined. A stylus has two ends, each a different size.I love finding unique ways to organize my craft supplies efficiently and attractively. And it worked!

I have a whole video on the assembly of the craft vinyl storage tower, which you can watch here:. This is one my IKEA hacks. Check out my tip on adding legs to IKEA furniture to really class it up!

First, assemble your Kallax storage unit.

How to build a light box!

We put ours together in about an hour, maybe a little less. This wood will go on the back of your Kallax unit so you can mount pegboards there. Of course, if you do not want pegboards on the back of your craft vinyl storage tower, you can skip this step. Turn your Kallax unit over and put the plywood on the back of it. Honestly, both sides of the Kallax unit looks pretty much the same, so just pick an open side. Screw the plywood to the Kallax unit using screws just long enough to go through the plywood and into the unit.

We screwed it in at the top, bottom, and middle. We followed the directions that came with each of the Skadis pegboards to attach them to the sides of the Kallax unit. You can fit two full pegboards on each side, with room to spare.

You can attach the casters directly to the bottom of your Kallax unit. We decided to add some extra wood between our casters and the craft vinyl storage unit because we wanted to bring it up to the same height as my Paper Storage Tower which used larger casters that IKEA no longer sells. Once the casters are secured on the bottom of your craft vinyl storage unit, turn it right side up and make sure everything seems stable.

Now the fun begins! We used the hooks on one side, the letter holders on the second side, and the elastic bands on the third side so you could see how well they worked to hold rolls of craft vinyl!

Here are the hooks — they hold one to two rolls of vinyl each. Each letter holder holds up to four rolls of vinyl on the side of your craft vinyl storage tower. My favorite of the three types of storage are the Skadis hooks, because they hold more vinyl and are a touch easier to put the vinyl in and out of. For the inside the craft vinyl storage unit, you could store even more vinyl.

Or you can put your related accessories in there. I chose to put my Cricut EasyPresses in the top two cubbies, my Cricut Infusible Ink collection in the third cubbie, and a box with pressing mats in the fourth cubbie!

I mostly have rolls of vinyl, so I preferred to store my vinyl on the hooks on the sides. I hope you also make a Craft Vinyl Tower of Power to get your vinyl chaos under control, too! In my dream craft room which looks a lot like yours! Thank you for sharing how you made this! This is great! And you could move the pegs for bigger rolls of vinyl. I have a couple of colors I buy in big rolls.

Great idea!! I have the Ikea pegboards already on my wall so I am thinking I can just hang my vinyl right on there.

Thanks so much for your awesome ideas and keep them coming LOL. I have to travel over an hour to get to one but this project is well worth that.Secure Online Ordering. Each delightful vignette, made with richly colored and textured wool, celebrates the sweet land that we love in beautiful detail.

The three main methods of transferring your embroidery pattern to your fabric are tracing, transfer, and using a stabilizer. Disclosure: Please note that some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission.

The first step is to print off your embroidery pattern or trace it onto paper or tracing paper. If the fabric is fine enough, you might be able to place your fabric directly over your paper pattern and start tracing. You can either tape your pattern to a bright window, then tape your fabric over top, or you can use a lightbox.

There are lightboxes that range in price and size an inexpensive option is the Crayola Light-Up Tracing Pador you can use a tablet. Putting a sheet of glass between your tablet and your embroidery pattern will help prevent damage to your screen from pressing too hard while tracing the design. Tape your pattern to the glass, then tape your fabric to the pattern or hold it in place carefully.

For the tracing method, there are a variety of tools you can use. Water soluble pens, Frixion erasable pensand pencils all work well. For the Frixion pens, the lines are removed by running an iron over the pen marks after stitching.

Washing can also prevent the lines from reappearing if your project ever gets cold like in your suitcase in an airplanebut it can depend on your fabric as well. An alternative to tracing your pattern directly onto your fabric is to transfer your design. Be careful about keeping your iron still while ironing to not smudge the lines, and you can pull up your paper to check how much of the lines have transferred.

There is a variety of different colours available, I got this Clover Chacopy paper from my local needlework shop. The variety of colours means you can use it on any colour or pattern fabric.

To use it, place your carbon sheet face down coloured side down onto your fabric, place your embroidery pattern face up on top, and trace your design using a hard pencil, pen, or tool.

Do NOT use carbon paper from an office supply shop, that will be permanent on your fabric. Products like Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy make transferring your design so easy.

You can get it in many different sized sheets or even rolls, but if you want to use your printer use letter sized sheets. You can also draw onto the stabilizer directly or trace your pattern onto itbut the great thing about it is the fact you can put it into your printer.

Do a test of your printer first and make sure you will be printing onto the correct side of the stabilizer. Once printed, cut out your design, peel off the backing paper and stick it to your fabric. Make sure your fabric is stretched in your hoop or frame before sticking on the stabilizer, otherwise the design could get buckled once you put your fabric in a hoop. Let your embroidery dry naturally, or you can gently iron it face down onto a towel to protect the shape of the stitches.

If you want to create a custom cross stitch piece, you will need a custom pattern. Start by choosing your design, which can be a photograph or a drawing. Then, trace the design onto a piece of grid paper. Complete your pattern by filling in the grid to indicate the stitch placement, thread color, and stitch type. To make a cross stitch pattern, start by placing a piece of grid paper over the image you want to use and trace the outline with a pencil.

If you can, use a backlit surface like a light box or a window on a sunny day to make the tracing easier.
